Session on: Misophonia

Misophonia, also known as selective sound sensitivity syndrome, starts with a trigger. It’s often an oral sound -- the noise someone makes when they eat, breathe, chew, yawn, or whistle. Sometimes a small repetitive motion is the cause -- someone fidgets, jostles you, or wiggles their foot. This lifelong condition usually starts between the ages of 9 and 13 and is more common with girls. It comes on quickly, but isn’t related to any one event.

Session on: PsychoactiveDrugs

Psychoactive drugs are substances that, when taken in or administered into one's system, disturb mental progressions, e.g. cognition. This term and its equivalent, psychotropic drug, are the most neutral and descriptive term for the whole class of substances, licit and illicit, of interest to drug policy. ‘Psychoactive’ does not necessarily imply dependence-producing, and in common idiom, the term is often left unspecified, as in ‘drug use’ or ‘substance abuse’.

Session on: Psychopharmacology

The use of drugs to assuage the symptoms of mental disorders makes psychoactiveagents—especially anti-psychotics and antidepressants, among the most widely prescribed pharmaceuticals today. Much discussion surrounds the use of stimulants to treat attention-deficit problems and the side effects of antidepressants, especially for children. The general effectiveness of antidepressants when measured against a placebo remains provocative, though the treatments that prove most effective combine drugs with psychotherapy.

Session on: PsychosomaticMedicine

Psychosomaticmedicine is a newly licensed sub-specialty in the field of psychiatry; it is also recognized as Consultation-Liaison psychiatry. Consultation-Liaison psychiatry provides knowledge, practice, and instruction in the relation between mental and physical illness. This field is associated with services like diagnosis, therapeutics and research of illnesses in this area. Hence it connects psychiatry and other medical specialties, so that physicians and psychiatrists can discuss how to best manage patients with psychosomatic illness.

Session on: Brain Stimulation Therapies

Brain stimulation therapies can play a role in treating certain mental disorders. Brain stimulation therapies involve activating or inhibiting the brain directly with electricity. The electricity can be given directly by electrodes implanted in the brain, or non invasively through electrodes placed on the scalp. The electricity can also be induced by using magnetic fields applied to the head. While these types of therapies are less frequently used than medication and psychotherapies, they hold promise for treating certain mental disorders that do not respond to other treatments.

Market Analysis

One in four people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorder at some point in their lives. Around 450 million people currently suffer from such conditions, placing mental disorder among the leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide.

Treatments are available, but nearly two-thirds of people with a known mental disorder never seek help from a health professional. Stigma, discrimination and neglect prevent care and treatment from reaching people with mental disorders, says the World Health Organization (WHO). Where there is neglect, there is little or no understanding. Where there is no understanding, there is neglect.

In a new report entitled "New Understanding, New Hope" the United Nations’ health agency seeks to break this vicious cycle and urges governments to seek solutions for  that are already available and affordable. Governments should move away from large mental institution and towards community health care, and integrate mental health care into primary health care and the general health care system, says WHO.

"Mental illness is not a personal failure. In fact, if there is failure, it is to be found in the way we have responded to people with mental and brain disorders. Over 80% of people with schizophrenia can be free of relapses at the end of one year of treatment with psychotic drugs combined with family intervention. Up to 60% of people with depression can recover with a proper combination of antidepressant drugs and psychotherapy. Up to 70% of people with epilepsy can be seizure free when treated with simple, inexpensive anticoagulants.

The responsibility for action lies with governments, says WHO. Currently, more than 40% of countries have no mental health policy and over 30% have no mental health program. Around 25% of countries have no mental health legislation.

The magnitude of mental health burden is not matched by the size and effectiveness of the response it demands. Currently, more than 33% of countries allocate less than 1% of their total health budgets to mental health, with another 33% spending just 1% of their budgets on mental health. A limited range of medicines is sufficient to treat the majority of mental disorder. About 25% of countries, however, do not have the three most commonly prescribed drugs used to treat schizophreniadepression and epilepsy at the primary health care level. There is only one psychiatrist per 100 000 people in over half the countries in the world, and 40% of countries have less than one hospital bed reserved for mental disorders per 10 000 people.

The report says new knowledge can have a tremendous impact on how individuals, societies and the public health community deal with mental disorder. What it requires is the courage and the commitment to take the necessary steps. The report is part of a year-long campaign on mental health. For the first time, multiple events at WHO including its premier report, technical discussions at the World Health Assembly and World Health Day, have all focused on one topic–mental health.

Members Associated with Mental health Research:

According to the United States Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are over 552,000 mental health professionals practicing in the U.S. today whose main focus is the treatment (and/or diagnosis) of mental health or substance abuse concerns. These are the labor statistics for mental health professionals in the U.S. The data come from the most recently published reports, usually from the 2007 to 2010 time frame.

Here is the breakdown for 2011:

Clinical and counselling psychologists – 152,000

Mental health and substance abuse social workers – 138,700

Mental health counselors – 113,300

Substance abuse counselors – 86,100

Psychiatrists – 34,400

Marriage and family therapists – 27,300

Statistical Analysis of Mental Health Professionals

Social workers, who often work with a family in a mental health capacity, account for over 642,000 jobs in the U.S. About 54 percent of jobs were in healthcare and social assistance industries, and 31 percent work for government. While a bachelor’s degree is necessary for entry-level positions, a master’s degree in social work or a related field is necessary for some positions. There is a lot of conflicting data for how many licensed clinical social workers there are, but best estimates suggest that approximately 60 percent of social workers in the U.S. are licensed.

Their breakdown from 2008 looks like:

Child, family and school social workers – 292,600

Medical and public health social workers – 138,700

Mental health and substance abuse social workers – 137,300

Social workers, all other – 73,400

Statistics of Hospitals Associated with Mental Health:

Between 1955 and 1995 deinstitutionalisation resulted in the number of beds for mental illness and learning disability in England’s health service (NHS) decreasing from over 150?0001 to fewer than 55?000. Although some evidence suggests that crisis teams and services for early intervention in psychosis can reduce the number of admissions for mental disorders compared with traditional psychiatric provision,2 3 one study 4 found that crisis teams reduce the number of voluntary admissions but not involuntary admissions—detentions under the Mental Health Act 1983. Observers are debating whether a new era of reinstitutionalisation has begun.

We examined changes in the number of psychiatric admissions in England from 1996 to 2006, explored any associations between reductions in NHS bed numbers and involuntary admission rates, and calculated the proportion of involuntary inpatients being treated in non-NHS facilities.
